Mine Risk Education programs are an important component of the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation approach to innovation in mine action. After examining the issues that effect populations living in mine and unexploded ordnance contaminated areas, we were able to develop several programs targeting these issue.

To address the shortcomings of standard MRE, Golden West developed the Indicator Program. Participants receive country-specific training and image-rich materials that function as a visual key to the environmental ‘indicators’ that signal the presence of landmines or unexploded ordnance (UXO). This Program empowers community members to mark the location of a found threat, and submit a report to authorities utilizing the simple reporting tool incorporated into Program materials.
